SOUTH WHITLEY – At Tuesday night's meeting, the South Whitley Town Council approved a street closure on Maple Street between the library and the post office for food trucks at the Park Department's event on July 3, Party at the Park.
Council also voted to allow alcohol in the town park during the event from 7 to 11 p.m., temporarily lifting the town's prohibition in public spaces. All other state laws involving alcohol remain in effect.
The event will involve a cornhole tournament, local food trucks, a 50-50 raffle, bounce houses, live music, fireworks and more.
Pre-registration for the cornhole tournament is open until June 26, with a registration fee of $10 per team. Forms can be collected and returned at the clerk's office.
In other business, council:
• Approved a street sweeping contract with the state.
• Approved DLZ right-of-way permits; water main construction will begin June 14 on Wayne Street.
• Heard concerns from Joe Rex on individuals speeding into town and ordinance enforcement for lawns not mowed.
• Authorized Town Marshal Chad Schipper to enter into a contract with Enterprise for police vehicles.
Jenna Reiff, attending in place of Clerk-Treasurer Alyssa Knepple, said that electric bills are now corrected. If residents have issues, they can visit the clerk's office and have their usage printed.
Council President Brock Waterson added that the "ETF" charge that is listed on the bills is not a new charge. It is a floating charge that has always been in place, but is now listed since the town switched to a new billing system.
Waterson also said the water and sewer rates were not raised with the electric utility rates. Only the electric rate was affected with the recent rate increase.
Council will next meet at 6:30 p.m. June 23.
