Posted

SOUTH WHITLEY – At Tuesday night's meeting, the South Whitley Town Council approved David Calhoun as a new officer for the South Whitley Police Department.
Calhoun will be sworn in at the next regular meeting.
Town Marshal Chad Schipper commended officer Gage Fannon for going "above and beyond" when notifying a local resident of her husband's car accident. Fannon drove the woman to the hospital where she was able to spend several hours with her husband before he died from his injuries.
Councilmember Kris Shoemaker said the park board is working on plans for their Fourth of July party at the town park, which will include live music, games, bounce houses, food vendors and more.
In other business, council:
• Approved utility adjustments for two residents totaling $1,169.30; both leaks have been repaired.
• Voted to allow town attorney Gregg Hockemeyer to put together a tentative timetable for electric rate increases; the base rate has not been raised for the town's electric utility since 1988, and the utility is at a deficit and is no longer supporting itself.
• Approved claims totaling $330,520.88.
Council will next meet at 6:30 p.m. March 10.
