The future of Mantis Skate Park depends on getting adult volunteers to oversee activities, Warsaw Parks' Recreation Director Denise Beno said Thursday.
The park closed earlier this month because several of the adults who helped supervise the skate park had ended their involvement, Beno said.
"It just hasn't been run the way it was supposed to," she said.
One of the requirements for the park to operate is that adults be present to supervise activities at all time, she said.
A meeting Tuesday night that included 14 interested youths and parents resulted in enough supervision to open the park Thursday night and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Operation of the skate park is managed by the Boy Scouts of America, and Jim Molebash, Boy Scout representative, told the Tuesday meeting that for the park to reopen on a regular basis, five needs must be met:
Adult supervision during park hours;
A regular schedule for park operation;
Responsibility on the part of park users;
Registration of Mantis club members with the Boy Scouts of America;
Coordination of park activities by an adult steering committee.
Adult volunteers "can get as involved as they would like to be," Beno said. "We need people who can commit to any amount of time, even two hours a month, or people who can help organize."
Molebash said his committee will meet again at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Nye Youth Cabin. Anyone interested in helping with the steering committee or serving as an adult volunteer can contact Jim Molebash at 269-2206.
