Six Warsaw schools were honored Thursday with Four Star School Awards for the 2006-07 school year.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed announced the 177 Hoosier public schools that received the honor. The award is the highest state distinction and is based on student achievement on ISTEP+ assessments and overall attendance rates.
"We are proud of these schools for their exceptionally high performance," Reed is quoted as saying in a press release. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize so many Indiana schools for their achievements and encourage all schools to continue striving for this accomplishment."
The Warsaw schools earning the distinction include Eisenhower, Leesburg, Jefferson, Lincoln and Madison elementary schools and Edgewood Middle School.
Friday afternoon, Warsaw School Assistant Superintendent Dr. Sandra Weaver said, "We are pleased that six of our 11 schools earned the highest distinction given by the state for student achievement. We want to commend all the staff in their efforts to make this happen."
A total of 1,811 Indiana public schools were eligible for the Four Star School Award. To earn the distinction, a school must be accredited by the Indiana State Board of Education, meet Adequate Yearly Progress as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, and perform in the top 25 percent of all the schools in the state in each of four areas. The areas include student attendance rates, mathematics proficiency scores, English/language arts proficiency scores and the percent of students passing both English/language arts and mathematics.
The annual award is non-monetary and schools earning this honor receive an award certificate.
