SILVER LAKE - Residents of Silver Lake soon will see a reduction in their sewer bills.
Tuesday night at its regular meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council approved an ordinance to reduce all residents' sewer rates by $1.75 and held a public hearing on the issue. No one spoke during the public hearing portion of the meeting.Since the town no longer has a debt service fund on the sewer, the savings will be passed on to the town's residents.
The reduction will take effect at a later date after the change has been advertised and approved on third reading.
The council also approved the 2008 salary ordinance. In 2008, board members will be paid $4,725 annually, while the clerk-treasurer will be paid $1,181.25 bi-weekly.
The ordinance originally stated the part-time deputy clerk be paid hourly with an annual cap of $12,100. However, after some discussion among board members, that cap was set at $9,200. The deputy clerk works about 20 hours per week on average.
In other business, the council:
n Approved and signed a contract with Multi-Township EMS. The only change in the new contract is that MTEMS will no longer pay $200 monthly rent to be housed in the town's fire station. MTEMS said they do not pay rent at any other facility and cannot afford that expense.
n Approved a resolution to encumber $4,984 to purchase welcome signs for the town.
n Approved a motion to retain the legal services of Rockhill Pinnick Law Firm for 2008.
n Heard Phil Shalley was named Silver Lake Fireman of the Year, and John Conley and Chuck Lewallen shared the Atta Boy Award for their dedication to the department.
n Approved a motion to purchase an under-tailgate spreader from W.A. Jones out of Columbia City. The upgraded model made of stainless steel will be purchased and installed on one of the town trucks for a total of $7,500.
n Recognized outgoing board members Gary Kneller and Stanley Williams.
n Approved sewer adjustments for Shawna Phillips and Samantha Rogers. Both had water leaks.
n Set an end-of-year meeting for Dec. 28 at 9 a.m. The main purpose of the meeting is to approve a claim docket that includes the payment for the sidewalk projects recently completed in the town.
Silver Lake Town Council members are Ronald Jones, president; Stanley Williams and Gary Kneller. Town clerk is Angie Glass.
