Silver Lake Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Underage Sex

Dustin Owens was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for child molesting. Owens, 41, of 10402 S. Ind. 15, Silver Lake, was arrested in December 2014 and charged with having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. The girl started having intercourse with Owens at his residence when she was 12 years old and she became pregnant. Owens denied to a caseworker that the child was his. Owens was scheduled to appear at a jury trial in Kosciusko County Superior Court 1 in front of Judge David Cates Dec. 15, but Owens failed to show. He was arrested in January for not appearing at the trial. A bench warrant for failure to appear was issued and KCSD detectives began to search for Owens, who had fled his home. He had been taken into custody by the Davenport (Iowa) Police Department, according to a press release from KCSD. Owens entered a guilty plea March 1. He appeared before Judge David Cates in Kosciusko County Superior Court 1 Thursday, and received a 30 year sentence to Indiana Department of corrections. He also must register as a sex offender for life.
