SILVER LAKE - Plans for the old Marathon Station in Silver Lake are still not finalized, but ideas are rolling in.
Town council president Brenda Wadkins said Tuesday the town plans to put a gazebo in the old parking lot, adding benches and a brick sidewalk making the area a "sitting park."
Wadkins told board members the company working on the old Marathon Station in Silver Lake went $1,151.59 over budget.
Wadkins said APT Environmental found a "hydraulic lift down there that had to be taken down and a wall had to be torn down in the basement."
The work has already been completed even though "there was no money in the budget to pay for it," Wadkins said.
Council members will look further for funds. No official decision was made Tuesday.
In other business:
Council members approved the 2001 trash contract. Wadkins said last year's contract runs out March 1.
"It did go up a little bit," she said.
Last year's contract was for $1,168 per month. This year's is $1,200 per month.
Council members granted approval to advertise for the sale of an old fire truck.
"A lot of people have expressed interest in getting it," Wadkins said.
Town Superintendent Phil Shalley reported the state highway sweeping agreement was up for consideration. He said the state will reimburse the town $510 per year "to take the Bobcat out and sweep the streets twice a year."
Council members approved the agreement.
Clerk-treasurer Teresa Howell reported Silver Lake's tax rate increased 0.0158 percent this year. Last year the tax rate was $8.2186 percent and this year it is $8.2344, "which I think is good to only have to go up that much," she said.
The next town council meeting is scheduled for March 13 at 7 p.m. at the town hall meeting room.
The Silver Lake Town Council comprises: president Brenda Wadkins, Gail Owens and Donna McCune.
