Shackelford-Painted China On Display At Museum

Posted

The dining room table, shelves and sideboard are graced with a display of Shackelford-painted china in the Old Jail Museum.

Local collectors Ron and Marge Himes said they were introduced to the work of Emma Grabner Shackelford by Jean Lucas, a former student. Other local collectors include Lucas' daughter-in-law, Pat Lucas, and Ed and Wayne Roberts. There are 22 china pieces and a watercolor by Shackelford plus the work of students in the exhibit. Additional items came from the museum's display cases.

Shackelford, wife of Dr. Tiffin J. Shackelford, taught watercolor and china painting classes in the basement of her husband's office at 214 S. Buffalo St. for years in the early part of the century.

The Shackelfords lived next door, at 216 S. Buffalo St., which later served as a dental office for Dr. James Baker. In the late 1940s, the house became the site of Shera Funeral Home, then the Kelly Funeral Home. Attorney Lucy Upson maintained her office there in the 1960s. The house was demolished in the early 1960s.

Shackelford's china features renditions of delicate flowers and juicy-looking fruit. Some of her students preferred geometric Art Deco designs.

In addition to plates, tea sets, breakfast sets and vases are included in the display through mid-October.

The Old Jail Museum is at 121 N. Indiana St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
