SOUTH WHITLEY - Sanitary sewer - storm drain construction in South Whitley is way ahead of schedule, according to Dennis Eberhart of the utilities department.
Repaving the streets may be as early as May 15, he told the town council.
The project has moved south on Ind. 25, south of Front Street, to the "Y" intersection, linking state roads 205, 5 and 14.
Bob Ruin approached the board after receiving a letter from the city advising him to clean up his property at 204 Second St. He asked the council exactly what they wanted done and if he could continue to park vehicles in the unimproved alley.
Town marshal Dave Wilkinson said he had been by the Ruin property and progress is being made.
Ruin was asked why two riding lawn mowers and three push mowers were kept under a tarp and whether or not they ran.
Ruin said he buys and fixes things then resells them.
"Maintenance is the main thing we're looking for here," said board president Tony Starkey.
The board said vehicles could be parked in the alley as long as they were tagged and running and the alley remained clear for access by utility companies.
Rick Magley approached the board again regarding a sanitary sewer line extension to the Spring Creek Mobile Home Park , which he owns. The trailer park lies outside town limits.
Magley was asked to put his proposal on paper for town attorney Greg Hockemeyer and the board to review.
Town clerk Mitch Winger said the town's water rates would need to be restructured before the end of the year. A study has shown they were not raised enough two years ago.
Customers still enjoy some of the lowest rates in Indiana. A typical water bill is between $6 and $10 per month, it was reported.
Starkey reported that six light poles have been installed at the baseball field and lights will be installed by next week. The town council contributed to the lighting for the park.
The electrical department is posting a position for an electrical assistant.
Board members are Tony Starkey, Tom Rudd and Judy Earnhart. The council meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the town hall.
