Sentencing Rescheduled In Pierceton Bar Fight

The sentencing hearing for one of the two men responsible for breaking a man’s eye socket and leg in a Pierceton bar fight in April has been rescheduled.

The sentencing of Paul Ruckman, 28, of 4980 E. CR 900S, Claypool, was rescheduled for Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.

Ruckman is charged with battery, a Class A misdemeanor, and battery causing serious bodily injury, a Class C felony. Originally he was charged with aggravated battery, a Class B felony.

As per Ruckman’s plea deal that was signed July 12, Ruckman would plead guilty to the misdemeanor and the felony would be dismissed.

During the sentencing hearing Thursday morning in Kosciusko County Circuit Court, Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Steven Hearn moved to have the sentencing rescheduled in order for the pre-sentence investigation report to be accurate.

“I am asking that the sentencing hearing be moved so that the PSI can be brough up to date and make it complete, because it is incomplete,” said Hearn.

Kosciusko County Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed had no objection with the request.

“I see that as a reasonable request. The PSI should be as accurate as possible,” Reed said.

Additionally Reed said that there was a very important issue that needed to be gone over at a later time– restitution.

Reed granted the states’ motion to move the sentencing. Reed scheduled that sentencing for Oct. 18, at 9 a.m.

The other man responsible for the attack, Toran Savant, 26, of 12600 Ind. 15S, North Manchester, was in the court room for a resitution hearing.

He was sentenced on June 14. Savant pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery. One count of battery causing serious bodily injury, a Class C felony, was dropped.

Savant was sentenced to time served.
