Gaylene Lloyd, 60, has seven dogs, and she brought two of her dogs, a poodle and york shire terrier, along for a "Doggy Fun Day" Friday.
Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County and Kosciusko Community Senior Activity Center Friday sponsored the event at Lucerne Park.
Lloyd, Warsaw, a dog groomer, said she enjoyed seeing the other dogs and dressing up her dogs.
"I have 10 kids, so having seven dogs is nothing," Lloyd said.
It was the second year for the event. Other sponsors were Dupont & Associates, representing Retirement Benefits Council, and Humana Insurance, Fort Wayne. Miller's Senior Living Community provided lunch.
There were 15 dogs and 15 senior citizens who participated in the event.
The dogs were judged on best tail wagging, best of show and best costume.
The pet owners had the opportunity to adopt pets from the AWL at a discounted rate. The regular price to adopt a dog is $100 and $50 for a cat. The discounted rate was $75 to adopt a dog and $35 to adopt a cat.
Those who participated in the event received a certificate and took their pets to the AWL for microchipping and nail clipping. AWL also provided information about breeds and temperaments of pets, including which would be most suitable for their particular situation in their home.
"This is a great event because we can help both seniors as well as our animals," said Darla McCammon, AWL director.
April Baxter, Senior Activity Center executive director, also said the event was beneficial to the seniors and their dogs."The dogs provide camaraderie for the seniors, and they enjoy their companionship at home and are able to share that today," Baxter said.
