Senate Candidate Mourdock Makes Campaign Stop at State Rep. Kubacki's Home

SYRACUSE – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock made a campaign stop at the home of State Representative Rebecca Kubacki Sunday night.

Approximately 34 local residents attended the gathering.

The event was organized by Dr. Ken Pennington, Syracuse.

Mourdock faces Democrat Joe Donnelly in the Nov. 6 election.

The Times-Union sat down with Mourdock to discuss his run for the senate seat.

Mourdock spoke about the medical device tax and said there is a difference between he and Donnelly.

“Donnelly voted for Obamacare with the medical device tax in there,” Mourdock said.

Mourdock said he thinks Obamacare is detrimental to the national economic recovery.

He said he believes it is the fundamental social contract for those older than age 55 who have worked all their life to be given a promise of Medicaid and Medicare.

“It’s immoral for government to make promises it knows it can’t keep,” Mourdock said.

He also spoke about national debt, and said the federal government should run the budget like it has done in Indiana.

He said fiscal discipline is lacking in Washington on the Democrat side.

“I want to take discipline and those kinds of things Representative Kubacki has stood for consistently to Washington,” Mourdock said.

Mourdock spoke about job creation.

He said before the private sector recovers and small businesses make investments again they want to know what the rules are.

“Currently, businesses don’t know what the taxes will be after the start of the year because they don’t know if the Bush tax cuts will be repealed or kept in place,” Mourdock said.

He said there is nothing the government is doing to send a message of certainty.

He said for job creation, taxes need to be reduced and there needs to be a tax code that is much more fair than it is today.

“We need the regulatory burden taken off of businesses,” Mourdock said.

“The federal government is doing more to kill jobs in America and they are the reason the economic recovery is not happening,” Mourdock said.

He said, if elected, he would like to be a part of the Republican-led U.S. Senate that sends a message of consistency and stability to the business community.

He said the largest difference between Donnelly and himself is that Donnelly wants to make government larger, but Mourdock said he wants to make government smaller.

He said he will work with Republicans and Democrats  to make government smaller, and he said he will work against the big spenders.
