A second man has filed for the vacant seat on the Milford Town Council.
Joseph Allen Shetter, 71, of South Henry Street, said he’s lived in the community the last 40 years and in town limits the last five with his wife.
By trade, he’s a retired heating, air conditioning and electrical contractor. He served as the town’s building commissioner for a few years “so I’m aware of what’s happening in town,” he said.
Councilwoman JoEllen Free resigned from the Milford Town Council, effective May 31, because she was moving out of the county. A Republican caucus has been scheduled to fill her seat at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Milford Town Hall, 121 S. Main St.
Last week, Ken Long, 54, filed for the position last week.
Shetter said he’s never held an elected position in the political field before. He has been involved in church-related service projects like missionary and disaster programs.
Asked why he chose to seek the council seat, he said he saw the opening and he’s a service-oriented person. He believes he can be an asset to the town of Milford.
He’s attended a few council meetings as the building commissioner when he had to present to the council.
“I’m approachable,” he said. “I think the town is doing great work right now. There’s nothing I’m going to change.”
The deadline for filing With Kosciusko County Republican Centeral Committee Chairman Mike Ragan for the council seat is 72 hours prior to caucus, or 7 p.m. today. Candidates for the council seat must be a resident of Milford, a Republican in good standing and not have a felony in their background.
Declarations of candidacy are available at the office of Kosciusko County Clerk of the Circuit Court, 121 N. Lake St., Warsaw.
Eligible members of the caucus are the Republican Precinct Committeemen of Van Buren Township who have served continuously, from 30 days before the date of the caucus. There are three Van Buren Township Precinct committeemen serving Milford who will select Free’s replacement at the caucus. They are Stephen Tucker, Van Buren 1; John Beer, Van Buren 2; and Dr. Bruce Lamb, Van Buren 3.
