Sculptor, Storyteller To Visit Jail Museum

Posted

Sculptor and storyteller Mary Masters will return to the Old Jail Museum April 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Masters' figures are legendary: Chief Joseph, Sacajawea, Sequoyah, No-Kis-Mis, Chief Pokagon and Geronimo.

Each piece has a story that Masters tells as if the person portrayed were an old friend or someone she knew.

In the finest Native American tradition, her stories are stories within stories, seemingly drawn from the spirit world from the past to the present into the future.

This is the Shipshewana-based artist's sixth annual appearance, according to Jeanie Jones, museum director.

The 1995 Indiana Premiere artist always draws a crowd and has plenty of sculptures on display. Each piece is lovingly detailed with leather costumes, wool blankets, beading, adornments in silver and other items appropriate to each personality.

In addition to the Native American figures, Masters has made a Santa Claus each year since 1991. While most of the figures sell for thousands of dollars, the Santa Clauses usually go for less than $100. Recently she added a Native American line for under $100, too.

There is no admission charge to the Old Jail Museum, 121 N. Indiana St., Warsaw. For more information, call 269-1078.
