One of the two individuals involved in the April 7 beating of a man outside a Pierceton bar was sentenced this morning in Kosciusko County Circuit Court.
Toran L. Savant, 27, of 12600 S. Ind. 15, North Manchester, pleaded guilty to battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
Savant was previously charged with aggravated battery, a Class B felony, but plead down to a Class A misdemeanor, per his plea agreement. Kosciusko County Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed accepted the plea agreement and immediately sentenced Savant to time served, a $100 fine and ordered Savant to pay court costs within 180 days.
Shortly before sentencing, Chief Deputy Prosecutor R. Steven Hearn and council for Savant, Antony Garza, approached the bench to speak with Reed. Reed later explained and ordered Savant back in court July 19 at 8:30 a.m. for a restitution hearing.
Savant, allegedly along with Paul Ruckman, 28, of 4980 E. CR 900S, Claypool, were involved in a beating that left a man with a broken leg and eye socket outside a Pierceton bar in April. Witnesses at the scene informed Pierceton officers that Ruckman had approached a woman, who had a restraining order against him, outside a bar in Pierceton. A middle-aged male told Ruckman that he needed to leave. At that point Ruckman and Savant attacked the man, breaking his leg and eye socket.
After a lengthy search that night, police found Ruckman in Sidney, after his mother told police where he was.
Later that morning, officer located Savant at Melody Acres Mobile Home Park on Ind. 15, north of North Manchester.
Pierceton Police Dept. officer Matt Owens said Savant had a history of violent activity.
