Marie Sarber is announcing her intent to run for the position of Kosciusko County auditor.
The next officeholder will take office in 2008 because the auditor's position is a holdover post. Her name will appear on the Republican ballot in the May primary. The auditor will be elected in November of this year. Sue Ann Mitchell is the current auditor. Mitchell has served two consecutive terms and is ineligible as a candidate this year.
Sarber, 40, currently is employed in the auditor's office and works with the county geographical imaging system, verifying information presented on deeds for property transfers. She also has held positions as payroll deputy and excise tax deputy.
Sarber has worked with budgeting, claims, tax sales, settlements, sewer liens and developed the program currently used to track ditch assessments.
"I enjoy hard work and want to continue to learn as much about the office as possible," Sarber said in a press release. She brought a work history of accounting and human resources to the office and held supervisory positions in both fields.
As for future plans for the auditor's office, Sarber said, "Sue Ann Mitchell has worked hard to have the office run as smoothly as it does. She has always stressed customer service."
Sarber intends to build upon the foundation Mitchell has put into place by investigating technology that will both serve the residents of the county quickly and help employees in the office perform their jobs more efficiently. She also plans to stress effective interdepartmental communications.
"The job the office does spans far and wide. Every government entity, school and library is affected by the work done in the auditor's office. My goal is to have communication between these entities be as frequent and open as possible."
Sarber lives in Warsaw with her husband, Roger. He works for the county highway department. They have two children, Joseph and Erin Hershberger.
Sarber is active with her children and church. She and her husband have coached Little League teams, soccer and softball and worked with Boy Scouts. The Sarbers attend the Warsaw Missionary Church. She is active with the church's council, drama and praise groups.
She is a graduate of Warsaw Community High School and Indiana University.
Sarber is a first-time candidate and hopes her experience in the office will win a positive response from county voters in the May primary.
