WINONA LAKE – A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a portion of the Heritage Trail will take place Friday morning.
The portion the Heritage Trail, part of the Lake City Greenway in Winona Lake, has been extended over one mile. At 10 a.m. Friday, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place to celebrate the Heritage Trail Greenway extension on land deeded from Grace College, Dr. Dane and Mary Louise Miller and the Town of Winona Lake. The ribbon-cutting will take place at the beginning of the new extension at the boardwalk along the creek near the end of Boys City Drive, according to a press release from the town.
Lake City Greenway, a paved trail enjoyed by walkers, runners, cyclists and others since 2007, now includes a 12-foot paved path that flows through land with woods and rolling hills, including a 140-foot boardwalk.
The total project was over $1.25 million with over $900,000 funded through the Indiana Department of Transportation Transportation Enhancement Fund. Included in the project was land donated to the town for easements through properties owned by the Town of Winona Lake, Dr. Dane and Mary Louise Miller and Grace College & Seminary. The K21 Health Foundation also donated monies to help offset the additional monies that were needed to fix bad soils that occurred early in the project, the release states.
“Grace College is pleased to be part of this project. We hope that by extending the trail, even more community members and students will make use of this special feature in our town,” said Dr. Bill Katip, president of Grace College and Seminary.
“The Town of Winona Lake is excited to formally open this new extension to the Heritage Trail. The Heritage Trail has been a real asset and helps improve health, fitness and quality of life. We see phenomenal usage already in the new extension. We are thankful to all our partners that made this possible and look forward to even more trails and sidewalks to connect the community,” said Winona Lake Town Coordinator Craig Allebach.
Participating in the ribbon-cutting will be representatives from the Town of Winona Lake, Grace College and Seminary, Dr. Dane and Mary Louise Foundation, Winona Lake Mountain Bike Trails, K21 Health Foundation, A & Z Engineering and Phend & Brown.
