NORTH WEBSTER - Nearly a dozen people at Wednesday's North Webster Town Council meeting were there for issues other than the proposed sexually oriented businesses ordinance.
Several residents of West Eden Shores are having problems with dogs across the channel in Eden Shores and a few others are unhappy with a school bus turnaround recently installed within inches of their property line and possibly encroaching on their front yards.
Speaking for the West Eden Shores residents, Nancy Corbin said that a resident in Eden Shores has several kennels and was curious about whether a license would be required. The animals make a lot of noise and disturb neighbors, she said.
Town Marshal Jerry Craig said he is familiar with the residence and that they also have wolves, some dog-wolf mixes and a bobcat caged there. Craig said that conservation officers have been to the property and that it is legal for them to have the animals there.
However, on at least one occasion, a resident said one of the dogs was loose and approached him at his mailbox.
Whether the animal owner has a kennel license is not known, but the matter will be looked into by town officials.
Also in Eden Shores, Ted Routh is concerned with a school bus turnaround placed next to his property. A gravel lane was put in after he and neighbors complained about ruts in the yards, but Routh contends the lane is unnecessary because an established turnaround down the road isn't used.
"In my opinion, this has lowered my property value by at least $10,000," Routh said.
Town superintendent Marshall Minnick said he was not aware that the gravel was put in and he will contact the transportation director of Wawasee Schools to discuss the matter.
In other business, the council:
Gave approval for the park board to spend $1,500 for shredded rubber "mulch" for under the new playground equipment.
Heard an update on the senior citizen housing project from Bob Murphy of R.P. Murphy & Associates. Concern about ruts in the yards there were addressed and Murphy said that the yards are not yet complete; the dirt will be rolled and top soil placed on the yards before they are seeded for grass. A $90,660 claim from D.J. Construction, which is building the duplexes there, was approved.
Passed a resolution allowing the clerk-treasurer to execute documents for Worker's Compensation insurance and approved IPEP membership plan for Worker's Compensation.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 18 in the town hall. The meeting was moved from the second to the third Wednesday of the month because one of the council members has another meeting on the 11th.
