To create a pond on his property, Ted Parker is seeking to vacate part of Oldfather Drain.
Thursday, the Kosciusko County Drainage Board approved Parker to go ahead with the planning and figures, but he needs to submit the plan at least one week before a drainage board meeting. The drainage board will then review Parker's plans and vote on whether or not to allow the vacation.
The ditch is at CRs 500W and 1200S in Seward Township, southwest of Silver Lake.
As part of the process, adjacent landowners will be notified. Parker did not provide a timeline to the board on when a plan will be submitted.
County surveyor Dick Kemper will review the plans to "make sure adjacent landowners aren't adversely affected," he said.
It is hoped, Kemper said, that the pond will provide flood storage that might help reduce the water flow to Silver Creek, especially during heavy storms.
Members of the drainage board include: president Brad Jackson, Donald Goon, Eldon Watkins, Maurice McDaniel and Dorris Harrold.
