Randall C. Cokl, Judith Earnhart and Leslie Hoffman were selected as the Republican candidates for South Whitley Council during a town convention Thursday. One ballot was cast by 117 voters each, and one ballot voided because one person voted for four council nominees instead of three. Hoffman, an elementary teacher at Riverview Elementary School in Huntington, received 79 votes; Cokl, a Whitley County dispatcher, received 74 votes; and Earnhart, Trimmer’s Styling Salon owner, received 51 votes. Incumbent Steve Smith received 42 votes; Frank Baldridge, 29 votes; Matt Dickmeyer, 19 votes; and incumbent Tony Starkey, 14 votes. Janet Howard won the clerk-treasurer’s nomination by two votes over incumbent Bob Gould, 59-57. Jorell Tucker served as the convention chairman and Deb Zawlocki was secretary. Donna Bowers and Joyce Hite were tellers. Each candidate was given five minutes to introduce themselves in the order they filed for office. The three town council nominees elected Thursday will be on the Nov. 3 general municipal election ballot along with Democrat Bill Boggs and Libertarian Douglas R. Morrissey. Howard will be challenged by Democrat Dawn Boggs for the clerk-treasurer office.
