10 Years Ago Joshiekka Outlaw received a $1,000 first-place 2001 academic excellence award from the Committee to Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She received the award from Joseph Banks, chairman of the committee's board of directors. Outlaw, a 2000 graduate of Warsaw Community High School, is a dean's list student at the University of Notre Dame, majoring in finance and pre-law. The scholarships are granted annually to minority residents of Kosciusko County who are in ninth grade through post-secondary studies.
25 Years Ago Hoosier Hospitality will soon be known to farmers throughout the South, as Kosciusko area farmers did their part recently to help feed starving livestock in the sun belt states. Approximately 400 bales of hay were loaded onto a semi tractor-trailer to be taken to Indianapolis and then put on a train bound for the Dixie region. Another four semis were to be filled with hay today, two at the site of Crop Fertility Specialist near Milford. The other two will be picking up loads in the southern part of Kosciusko County.
50 Years Ago Paul Benson, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Benson, Winona Lake, followed his two brothers' example to the letter recently and copped the annual Soap Box Derby by flying home ahead of Warsaw's Joe Haywood in the time of :23.1. Paul, third youngest of four brothers, was preceded to the winner's circle in 1956 by Dale and then in 1958 by Jay. Thus, Mentone's domination was halted, with Eddie Tridle winning in 1960 and Steve Shirey in 1959.
75 Years Ago Residents of New Paris are planning a big two-day celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the town to be held next month. The event is expected to bring former residents, relatives and friends of New Parisians from all parts of the country Aug. 13 and 14. Among the features of the program, which is being built to interest and entertain all ages and types of people, will be: races, games and contests, band music, speaking, a grand parade, refreshments and various forms of entertainment.
