June 27 10 Years Ago Jonathan Wilcoxson, son of Brent and Deb Wilcoxson, Winona Lake, has qualified for the National Merit Scholar competition because of his performance on the PSAT test. At Lakeland Christian Academy, he has been involved in basketball, soccer and cheerblock. Because of his academic potential, he is an outstanding student as well as athlete. Jonathan is among the 50,000 highest scoring participants of more than 1 million juniors in the United States. 25 Years Ago Sixteen-year-old Kevin Atkins will get his second chance at sprint car racing when he returns to the Warsaw Speedway. He started racing four years ago in an old black stock car. After a year of driving experience and a third-place finish in the season championship, he moved up to the challenging class of sprint car competition in 1985. Kevin raced half of the season with his best finish a ninth in the feature and a fifth in a heat race. Insurance company representatives then notified the Speedway that Kevin would no longer be able to race until he turned 16. He’ll be racing in his new 34a Sprinter when the 1988 racing season begins tonight on the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds track. 50 Years Ago “Music Around The World” was the theme used for the annual spring music program of Adams Grade School under the direction of Mrs. Donald Hogan, music instructor. Willard Snapp directed the sixth-grade class in several flutaphone numbers. Pupils represented various countries of the world: Patrick Enyart, grade one, Ireland; Carol Clark, grade three, Hawaii; Charles Mudd, grade four, France; Sandra Chapkowski, grade three, Hawaii; Roberta Van Dyke, grade two, Holland. All grades participated in the presentation. 75 Years Ago The town board of Winona Lake met Wednesday evening and voted to set their clocks ahead one hour Saturday, May 14, in order to have a uniform time for Warsaw and Winona Lake. The ordinance will be effective each year hereafter from the last Saturday in April to the last Saturday in September. F.D. Irvine was elected president of the Leesburg Better Community club; Robert T. Gilliam, vice-president; Grant B. Willis, treasurer; and Fred Anglin, secretary. Discussion of Daylight Savings Time for Leesburg indicated a favorable opinion to the change, which will be decided by vote of Leesburg’s town board next Monday evening.
