A psychiatrist will be hired to help the defense prepare the case for Christopher L. Thompson.
Thompson, 19, of Warsaw, is charged with murder in connection with the Oct. 1 death of 21-year-old Jamie Sloan of Warsaw.
Sloan's body was found by a farmer on Oct. 7. She was reportedly shot in the head by a sawed-off shotgun. Thompson was arrested and charged with the murder the same day the body was found.
Jay Rigdon, the court-appointed attorney for Thompson, filed a motion Monday to employ a psychiatrist at the public's expense.
Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed granted the request, allowing for a private psychiatrist to be hired.
Rigdon has not indicated whether an insanity defense will be used in the case.
