Property Owners May Wait Two More Months For Tax Bills

Posted
Property tax bills could be in the mail by late September or early October, according to Kosciusko County Chief Deputy Treasurer Cindy Nolton.

The due date for the tax bills will be Nov. 10. Instead of a spring bill and a fall bill, property owners will only receive one bill for 2008 taxes.

Because of a delay in receiving state-certified tax rates, the county sent out a voluntary payment option in May. This allows county property owners to voluntarily pay toward their tax bill before the bill arrives. The revenue from voluntary payments helped local government continue services in the absence of spring tax payments. Earlier this month, the treasurer's office reported they collected $8.2 million in voluntary payments, 20.5 percent of the first half collection total.

Nolton said her office is still accepting voluntary payments. Any amount voluntarily paid will be credited on the tax bill statements due Nov. 10. Any voluntary payments which exceed a property owner's actual tax statement will be refunded after the state verifies the surplus payment.
