Prep Roundup: Valley State Runner-Up In Unified FootballINDIANAPOLIS – Though they came up short in the state finals, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings had a successful season in the IHSAA’s inaugural year of Unified Flag Football.

Valley, led by former varsity football head coach Jeff Shriver, finished the season with a 5-1 record after losing 50-26 to Bedford North Lawrence in Saturday’s state championship game, which was played at the Indianapolis Colts’ training facility.

Unified sports are a partnership between Special Olympics Indiana and the IHSAA.

There were 25 Unified Flag Football teams this season.

Valley beat Noblesville 31-24 in the state semifinals Saturday, while Bedford North Lawrence beat Ben Davis 52-17.



Lady Cougars Fall In Regional Semifinals

LAKEVILLE – Lakeland Christian Academy’s historic girls soccer season came to an end Saturday in the Class 1A regional semifinals at Newton Park.

The Lady Cougars, who won the school’s first sectional championship in any sport the week before, fell 7-2 to top-ranked Wheeler.

LCA trailed 5-0 at halftime and got second-half goals from junior Tori Calizo and senior Anna Reimink.

Reimink assisted on Calizo’s goal.

LCA finished the season with a record of 14-4-2.

Wheeler (21-0) went on to beat No. 7 Argos 5-0 in the regional final and advanced to this week’s Kokomo Semistate, where it will play No. 3 Lafayette Central Catholic.



Valley Spikers Fall In Sectional Final

AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley’s volleyball team saw its season end in the sectional final in its own gym Saturday.

The Lady Vikings, who beat Lakeland in three games in the semifinals earlier in the day, fell 25-21, 25-11, 25-15 to West Noble in the Class 3A final.

Valley ended the season with an 18-16 record, while West Noble won its fourth sectional title and will play Bellmont in the regional at Norwell High School.

West Noble beat NorthWood 25-18, 25-15, 25-13 in the semifinals.

Valley’s roster was highlighted by a nine-player senior class that included Shayleigh Shriver and Sophie Bussard, both of whom own career record for the Lady Vikings.



Wawasee Individuals Advance To Semistate

DUNLAP – Wawasee’s boys and girls cross country teams competed in the regional at Ox Bow Park Saturday.

While neither squad advanced to the semistate as a team, each will be represented by at least one individual.

The top five teams, as well as the top 10 individuals not on an advancing team, qualified for the semistate.

The Wawasee boys team finished sixth out of 10 teams.

Spencer Hare crossed the line in a sixth-place time of 16:32, and teammate Michael Hammer was 26th in 17:17. Both advanced to the semistate.

Wawasee’s other scoring runners included Luke Griner (42nd, 17:39), Thomas Conley (46th, 17:46) and Jace Alexander (47th, 17:47).

Elkhart Memorial won the team title with 71 points, followed in the top five by South Bend Riley (80), Penn (86), Goshen (91) and Elkhart Central (126).

Riley’s Jared Chapin was the race winner, crossing the finish line in 16:13.

On the girls side, Wawasee finished seventh in the team standings.

Penn won with 39 points, followed in the top five by Mishawaka (55), Elkhart Memorial (104), Northridge (120) and Elkhart Central (124).

Kenzie Smith led the Lady Warriors with a ninth-place time of 19:57 and advanced individually to the semistate.

Other runners in Wawasee’s scoring lineup included Lily Tyler (36th, 21:22), Bailey Mayhew (51st, 21:42), Emma Ebright (57th, 21:52) and Ella Beezley (61st, 21:52).

Memorial’s Morgan Dyer won the girls race in a time of 18:56.

Warsaw JV Team Finishes With Win

The Warsaw JV football team finished the season Saturday with a 26-20 win at Concord. The Tigers ended the year 6-3 overall and 5-1 in NLC play.

Aaron Greene rushed for two Warsaw touchdowns, while Jacob Hawn and Patrick Zollinger had one each.

The Tigers’ defense was led by Zac DeFord, Parker Davenport, and Zollinger, who had an interception while playing defense to go with his offensive score.



Wawasee JV Football Team Beats Goshen

GOSHEN – Wawasee’s JV football team closed the season with a 34-21 win at Northern Lakes Conference rival Goshen on Saturday.

The Warriors finished the year with an overall record of 4-5, and they were 3-4 in NLC?play.
