Prep Roundup: Runkel Leads Lady Squires At New Prairie Invite

NEW CARLISLE – Torina Runkel placed 10th to lead the Manchester girls cross country team to a first-place finish in the Class 1A division Saturday at the New Prairie Invitational.
Manchester had a team score of 91 to place first out of 28 teams. Warsaw placed 11th (318) in 3A, while Tippecanoe Valley was 22nd (620) in 2A.
West Lafayette won in 2A (110), while Pike won in 3A (108).
On the boys side, Manchester placed sixth (237) and Triton was 13th (375) in 1A, while Warsaw was 21st (531) in 3A and Valley finished 23rd (626) in 2A.
Illiana Christian won the boys 1A meet (119 points), while Belmont won in 2A (60) and Lowell took the 3A meet (151).
Runkel finished in 20:55.5 for Manchester, while Jaelyn Webb was 11th (21:02.3), Katie Barker was 19th (21:53.8), Kambree Cashdollar finished 22nd (22:00.8), and Halle Briner was 29th (22:21.9).
Warsaw’s Angie Sanchez ran the race in 48th place (21:02.9), while Wini Barnett was 54th (21:06.6), Megan Dawson was 71st (21:32.8), Amslie Howett placed 72nd (21:33.7), and Adree Beckham placed 73rd (21:36.2).
Valeria Jimenez was 76th (23:18.7) for Valley, while Haley Hoover was 111th (24:31.5), Lorena Santiago was 132nd (26:00.3), Ava Craig came in 145th (27:23.8), and Lauren Sponseller placed 156th (28:22.8).
Triton had three runners compete. Briana Wilhite finished in 23:39.3, while Makenna May (25:02.9) and Annie Hill (25:43.9) also ran the race.
On the boys side, Carter Bedke was seventh overall (17:32.5) for Manchester, while Cade Jones was 46th (19:11.5), Wilson Nettleton was 55th (19:34.4), Reece Adamiec placed 56th (19:35.3) and Ethan Davis came in 73rd (19:54.1).
Triton was led by Russell Reichard, who placed 43rd (19:06.4), while Brandon Kitch was 54th (19:30.5), Josiah Page placed 82nd (20:14.2), Jesse Page came in 84th (20:16.6), and Breighton Treesh finished 112th (21:07.7).
Zeb Hernandez placed 21st overall for Warsaw (16:57.4), Jack Horoho was 85th (18:03.7), Fernando Niebbia placed 124th (18:40.4), Anthony Bass came in 140th (19:01.2) and Noah Marshall was 161st (19:24.4).
Valley’s Matthew Howes placed 43rd (18:39.4), while Mitchell Smith was 79th (19:32.7), Jace Holloway came in 157th (22:08.9), Chase Miller was 160th (22:12.4) and Grayson Sriver came in 187th (24:52.9).
Warsaw’s Taylor Gunter won the reserves race (21:30), while her teammate Ava Knight placed second (21:36).
Santos Zamarripa led Warsaw’s boys reserves by placing 67th (20:09.6).
Lady Squires Advance To Golf Regional
MARION – Manchester’s girls golf team finished second in Saturday’s nine-team sectional at Arbor Trace and advanced to the regional for the seventh time in nine years.
Led by third-place individual Kelsey Eichenauer’s 82, the Lady Squires shot a four-player score of 361.
Madyson Ulrey carded an 86, while Cora Barnett and Sam Kissell finished at 95 and 98, respectively. Alissa Bickerstaff rounded out Manchester’s lineup with a 107.
“We played some great holes today but had some decisions hurt us on the back that inflated our scores,” said Manchester coach Josh Troyer.
“We have some work to do mentally to be better prepared for the regional. I’m proud of how the girls finished today after some big numbers in the beginning or middle of their rounds. This time of year we just have to survive and advance. I’m looking forward to seeing how we bounce back.”
Amara Eckert of Huntington North was the medalist with a 75, leading her squad to the team title with a score of 345.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on an advancing team qualify for Saturday’s regional in Kendallville.
Eastbrook finished third as a team at 376 and will join Huntington North and Manchester at the regional.
Warsaw Spikers Finish Second At MC
MICHIGAN CITY – The Warsaw volleyball team finished second Saturday at the Michigan City Tournament.
The Lady Tigers went 3-1 on the day, losing to Michigan City 25-20, 22-25, 15-13 in the title match.
Warsaw started the invite with a 25-20, 25-18 win over Fort Wayne Concordia before beating Concord 25-21, 25-9 and defeating Valparaiso 27-25, 26-24.
Kacy Bragg recorded 10 kills, 12 digs and 63 assists for Warsaw, while Kylie Smith had 29 digs, Betty Barnett registered 28 kills, and Katie Swanson recorded 13 kills 12 aces.
Warsaw’s Cora West had 20 digs, while McKenna Hawblitzel notched 17 digs, Kennedy Lauck recorded 14 kills, and Rachael Yeager posted 11 blocks.
Lady Warriors Go .500 At Own?Invite
SYRACUSE – The Wawasee volleyball squad split the difference Saturday at its own invitational.
The Lady Warriors (9-9) began the day with a 25-21, 25-20 loss to Garrett.
They rebounded by topping Whitko 25-21, 25-12, and edged Columbia City 25-21, 18-25, 16-14.
Wawasee’s final match of the invite was a 25-20, 25-22 loss at the hands of Wabash.
Madison Simmons and Elizabeth Kleopfer spiked 18 kills each for the Lady Warriors, while Molly Jones recorded 12 kills and Hannah Gaerte posted 11 kills.
Wawasee’s Brooke Heche tallied 25 digs, while Kleopfer had 18 and Simmons registered 14.
Triton Tennis Trails In Tournament
PORTAGE – The Triton boys tennis team placed eighth out of eight teams at Saturday’s Portage Tournament.
Triton had a team score of 9, while South Bend St. Joseph won the event with a 48.
John Gardner was seventh at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Portage.
At No. 2 singles, Jared Bules was seventh, as he won a match 6-2, 6-2 against Centerville.
Connor Large placed eighth at No. 3 singles.
In the doubles matches, the No. 1 duo of Carter Kuntz and Chase Butler placed sixth, with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Highland.
The No. 2 team of Grant Elb and Tyler Heckaman placed eighth.
Burns Sizzles In Warsaw Soccer Win
ELKHART – Blake Burns scored two goals to lead the Warsaw boys soccer team to a 3-1 win Saturday at Elkhart Central.
Burns scored on assists by Agustin Hildalgo, while Jose Lara also kicked in a goal.
Warsaw (8-2-3) will host Northrop today at 7 p.m.
Cougars Crush Granger Christian
MISHAWAKA – Micah Mansfield and Parker Stewart pulled off a pair of hat tricks to lead the Lakeland Christian boys soccer team to an 11-0 rout Saturday at Granger Christian.
Theran McKeever scored two goals for the Cougars (8-2-1), while Remington Swanson, Jacob Harmon and Landon Twombly also scored goals.
McKeever also assisted on three goals, while Harmon tallied two assists and Swanson and Stewart each had one assist.
Swanson and Peter Koller combined for four saves in the net for the Cougars.
Wawasee Warriors Edged By East Noble
SYRACUSE – Ethan Carey and Braedon Schlaback scored goals, but the Wawasee boys soccer team was slighted 3-2 Saturday by East Noble in a home match.
Carey’s goal came in the 28th minute of play, assisted by Dylan Dewitt.
Schlaback scored with less than two minutes remaining.
Dillon Drake was in the net with nine saves for the Warriors (3-8).
Wawasee’s JV team (3-8) played in two matches Saturday in a tournament at Goshen High School.
The Warriors dropped the first match 3-0 to NorthWood, and fell 7-2 to Plymouth.
North Miami Blanks Whitko Kickers
SOUTH WHITLEY – The Whitko boys soccer team was shut out 6-0 Saturday by North Miami in a home match.
North Miami scored three goals in the first half and added three more in the second.
Lady Wildcats Waver Against Warriors
SOUTH WHITLEY – Charlotte Cripe scored two goals, but the Whitko girls soccer team lost 3-2 to North Miami Saturday in a home match.
Julia Seifert was in the net with 13 saves for the Lady Wildcats.
Tigers Fall Short On Gridiron
Aaron Greene’s two touchdowns weren’t enough as the Warsaw JV football team lost 15-12 to Northridge Saturday in a Northern Lakes Conference game at Fisher Field.
Warsaw’s Skylar Knisely, Andres Adame and Zach Ransbottom all recovered fumbles, while Gage Lyon intercepted a pass.
The Tigers (2-3, 1-1 NLC) will play Saturday at 10 a.m. at Goshen.
Wawasee Nipped By NorthWood
NAPPANEE – The Wawasee football team lost 36-30 Saturday in a Northern Lakes Conference matchup at NorthWood.
The Warriors are 1-4, 0-3 NLC. They will host Plymouth on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Warsaw JV Netters Take Third At Conference Tourney
SYRACUSE – The Warsaw boys JV tennis team placed third at Saturday’s Northern Lakes Conference Tournament at Wawasee.
Warsaw’s Harrison Lewis placed third at No. 3 singles, while Trey Lewis was second at No. 2 singles and Hayden Anderson came in fifth at No. 1 singles.
Nick Rata and Carter Schuh teamed up at No. 1 doubles for fifth place for the Tigers, while Zachary Nicholas and Garrett Rodgers finished third at No. 2 doubles.
NorthWood and Concord tied for first place in the tournament.
