Potpourri: Red Cross Eyes Pete Thorn Center For Emergency Uses In The Future

Posted
To begin with, my apologies for the heavy tilt of Republican tidbits, but that’s what was available on this week’s political buffet.

So let’s get started ...

Mayor Joe Thallemer touted the city’s response to the recent polar vortex that sent temperatures plunging to record depths, and pointed out one possible bright spot.

Speaking at Friday’s board of works and safety meeting, Thallemer thanked a long list of city departments for their roles. Those included police, fire, the street department and parks department for various roles, some of which involved the warming center at the Pete Thorn Center.

He specifically thanked Andy Wright, a parks department employee who was one of several folks who went the extra mile in helping accommodate several people who stayed overnight at the Pete Thorn Center.

The good news, Thallemer  said, is that the Red Cross discussed plans to use the center, including the senior center, as a site for future emergency housing. The large gym is perfect for housing large numbers of people and the building also has showers and a kitchen.

The talks, though, are very tentative, he said.

Thallemer Website – Speaking of Thallemer, the two-term mayor now has a campaign website, goodforwarsaw.com, which lists core issues and accomplishments.

With less than a week left in the filing period, Thallemer is facing one challenger, councilman Ron Shoemaker, who also has a website, ronshoemaker.com.

And while we’re at it ... plans for this year’s State of the City address by Thallemer were announced during Thursday’s Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner Thursday night by President and CEO  Rob Parker.

This year’s event will be March 12 at 2517 and will be open to the public.

GOP Events – Kosciusko County Republicans have announced dates for two events ahead of the May primary. The annual fish fry will be April 3 and the Lincoln Day Dinner at 2517 will be April 26.

State Events – On the state level, the GOP has lined up two significant names for its spring dinner. According to Indiana Republican spokesman Pete Seat, guests at the dinner will include Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie, the former campaign manager and deputy campaign manager (respectively) for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

"There's no question that Indiana is Trump country," said Kyle Hupfer, chairman of the Indiana Republican Party. "This is the state where President Trump clinched the Republican nomination, found his vice president, received his first votes on election night in 2016 and helped elect a new U.S. senator in Mike Braun.”

Lewandowski and Bossie, who also serves as the Maryland National Committeeman for the Republican National Committee, are the authors of the recently published book "Trump's Enemies: How the Deep State is Undermining the Presidency."

The event will be March 11 at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis, according to Seat.
