Pope To Be Honored Friday In Warsaw

Posted

Pope John Paul II will be honored and remembered at the Kosciuszko Monument on the Kosciusko County Courthouse lawn Friday at 8 a.m. The monument is on the Main Street side of the courthouse.

Ken Locke, Lincolnway District chairman, BSA, and Msgr. James Wolf, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw, will lead a short time of prayer and unity. A wreath will be laid honoring the late Pontiff for his stand for freedom around the world, especially in his native Poland.

Locke said, "Gen. Thaddeus Kosciuszko, son of Poland, was a hero of the American Revolutionary War and leader of the attempt to free his native land from the oppression of Russia. In that spirit, Pope John Paul II stood in peaceful resistance to the oppression of communism in Poland." Locke also quoted Lech Walesa, leader of Poland's Solidarity Movement, who said about Pope John Paul II, "[Without him] there would be no end of communism, or at least much later, and the end would have been bloody."

A condolence book will be available to be signed that will be sent to the Vatican, and Titus Funeral Home will provide prayer cards honoring the Pope. Waclaw "Adam" Adamczyk, a native of Poland, now living in Warsaw, also has been asked to participate.

The public is invited to attend this time of remembrance and prayer. For more information, call Locke at 574-268-7697 or e-mail warotary@kconline.com
