Planners OK Rezoning For Girl Scout Camp

Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission approved a recommendation to rezone a 20-acre piece of land at the Limberlost Campground near Syracuse Wednesday afternoon.

The commission voted unanimously to recommend to the county commissioners that the land at the corner of CR 500E and D15 Lane, also known as CR 950N, be rezoned from public use to agriculture. This paves the way for the Girls Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana to sell the property.

Don Cross, director of the Girls Scouts, said the parcel of land in question has never been used by the Girl Scouts.

Cross said the organization hired a property consultant to look at pieces of land that could be sold to increase revenue.

A piece of land owned by the group near Logansport was also recommended to be sold.

Don Scearce, president of the Dewart Lake Protective Association, said he wasn't protesting the rezoning recommendation, but wanted the Girl Scout and the plan commission to be aware of what the rezoning and eventually development of that land could mean.

Scearce suggested the board use it as a conservation easement and said it was important the areas water shed remain protected.

Lee Beer, a representative of Schrader Real Estate, said there are two possible building sites on the land and it would be divided up into a 10-acre parcel on the west end of the property and two five-acre parcels.

After a discussion, the plan commission approved sending the recommendation to the commissioners. The commissioners will vote on it at their Sept. 15 meeting.

The board also approved a rezoning recommendation for a four-acre piece of land at the northeast corner of Ind. 13 and CR 500N.

The property is currently a part of a 64.8-acre piece of land owned by the Dorsey family.

Plans are already set for that four-acre parcel to be sold to Owen Family Funeral Home for a new funeral home site.

The commission approved to recommend to the county commissioners that the piece of land be rezoned from residential to commercial.

A plat and development plan will address issues about traffic.

The commission also looked over drainage problems involving a pond at Summerfield subdivision located on Ferguson Road.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the commission, along with Area Plan Director Dan Richard, discussed ways things like permits and variances can be streamlined.

Richard asked plan commission members to study ways to make processes easier for people.
