PIERCETON - Pierceton Town Council held its first meeting of 2011, and board member Jerry Hartman encouraged residents to get involved.
Hartman, Jerry Kreger and Mandy Espinzoa's seats are all up for election this year.
"I urge people to be thinking about running or campaigning for someone else," said Hartman. "Get involved in your local government."
According to the Kosciusko County Clerk's Office, Pierceton residents can file between now and Aug. 1 at noon.
A caucus will then be held in which candidates are chosen.
According to Pierceton Clerk-Treasurer Janet Castle, a list of candidates will then appear on the Nov. 3 ballot.
During Monday night's meeting, Pierceton Town Marshal Tim Sammons told the board that the DARE program for students will start in March and run through the end of May.
Sammons said he is currently looking into grants for 2011 and completing records for the Indiana State Law Enforcement Academy.
Utilities Superintendent Chip Hill was thanked by Espinoza for his work in dealing with a water main break in late December.
The break caused the town to be under a boil advisory.
A resident at Monday's meeting asked if the council was worried that giving different amounts of raises to town employees would create friction.
"We are having an executive session to give supervisors guidelines," said Kreger. "Employees are going to have guidelines and goals. And we're going to meet every quarter to see if they are meeting those goals."
Kreger said that in the past employees have been well aware of why they haven't received pay increases.
The Pierceton Chamber of Commerce will hold a motorcycle show in town May 21.
Kim Rose told the board that Pierceton Days is scheduled for Aug. 5 and 6 this year.
