Pierceton Man Arrested for Burglary, Attempted Murder

County officers have an alleged home burglar in custody that shot at the returning home owners Monday night. Aubert Clevenger, 30, Pierceton. was arrested and held on charges of attempted murder after allegedly burglarizing a home and shooting at the homeowner. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies and officers from the North Webster Police Department responded at 9:49 p.m. to 8947 E. CR 500N after receiving a 911 call of a residential burglary. Officers were advised that the homeowners had returned to their residence to find an unknown vehicle in the driveway. The victims also stated that a male suspect exited their home and leveled a long gun in their direction and advised them to leave, but subsequently fired the weapon into their vehicle. The victim’s son arrived and viewed the suspect leaving the scene eastbound on CR 500N. He proceeded to follow and provided the Kosciusko County Central Dispatch Center with vehicle information and direction until a North Webster officer interceded in the area of Ind. 13 and CR 300N. KCSD officers also converged on the area and attempted a traffic stop but the suspect fled, striking “Stop Stick” deployment near CR 150N. The suspect vehicle continued until stopping in the area of CRs 150N and 650E, where the driver exited and fled south into a field and then a nearby wooded area. As officer established a perimeter, Winona Lake officer Joe Bumbaugh, with his canine unit, was able to apprehend the suspect, Clevenger was transported from the scene to Kosciusko Community Hospital after receiving injuries from being bitten during the arrest. KCSD detectives and crime scene technicians, along with Indiana State Police technicians, processed the original CR 500N scene, locating evidence that the victims’ vehicle had been struck by a 12-gauge shotgun. KCSD detectives are investigating the correlation of an earlier home burglary that may involve Clevenger. Clevenger is currently in custody on a prosecutorial hold pending further review of potential charges.
