Pierceton Gearing Up For Annual Festival

Posted
PIERCETON - The town of Pierceton heard information on next month's Pierceton Days.

The festival is scheduled for Aug. 6-7.

Festival organizer Kim Rose asked the council to allow Market Street to be closed from Second Street to First Street (Ind. 13) for both Friday and Saturday, which the council allowed.

Rose asked if people in town could be reminded of the golf cart ordinance.

Since Pierceton never adopted its own golf cart ordinance it would fall to the state law, which says that drivers have to be licensed and the carts must be insured. They also have to have lights, rearview mirrors and a slow-moving vehicle sign.

There will be a blood drive Aug. 7 during Pierceton Days at the town building from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The town council approved allowing Chip Hill from the street department to close off a street for the Pierceton Art Fair despite the fact that nobody from the art fair has appeared before the council or gone to a town employee to inform them of the art fair taking place.

The council adopted a policy for the police department to use a complaint form if any residents want to file one against an officer.

Town Marshal Tim Sammons said he addressed complaints levied against officer Matt Owens and found one to be unsubstantiated.

The other complaint about Owens dealing with juveniles, Sammons said that the juveniles in question were 17 and Owens was called because of a complaint about possible tobacco or drug use.

After viewing the in-car video, Sammons said Owens acted professionally and one of the teens was cited for tobacco use by a minor. Sammons also said one of the juveniles had previously been arrested.

The board also approved creating a sister complaint policy for other town employees.

Pierceton Fire Chief Matt Brubaker said that the downtown Christmas lights need to be repainted and relighted. The cost would total $1,850.

Town board member Jerry Kreger noted that those lights have never been the town's responsibility.

The board voted for board President Jerry Hartman to draft a letter to the Pierceton Chamber of Commerce stating that the lights need to be relighted and repainted.

Town council members are Kreger, Hartman and Mandy Espinoza.
