PIERCETON - Pierceton Town Council will most likely wait until the beginning of 2008 to make a decision on the purchase of a new police car.
Police Chief Tim Sammons gave the council information Monday on two possibilities for replacing one of the department's cars. Sammons said he has prices for a 2008 Dodge Charger, $24,575; and a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria, $22,404.Sammons told the council if the town buys the Ford, some of the equipment in the trade-in car could be kept and re-used in the new car. He said if the town buys the Dodge, the equipment could be sold.
The trade-in car, a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria, has 102,971 miles on it. Sammons said that is too many for an emergency vehicle. He told the council his department has received 4,719 emergency calls so far this year.
"That's a lot of calls you're driving a squad car to," he said.
The board decided to wait until January to make a decision on the car purchase.
Council President Jerry Kreger publicly thanked Chris Long and family for the donation of playground equipment to the Pierceton-Washington Township Park in memory of Long's son, Samuel. Samuel, 18 months, died in an accident in June. Long donated about $20,000 in equipment to the park.
"Their donation is very generous," Kreger said.
The council approved a request from Chris Shepherd, Glenn Hall and Eric Trump of Harvest Community Church to hold the live nativity at Brower Park later this month. Shepherd said the event will be Dec. 19-21, beginning each evening at 6 p.m. Shepherd said refreshments will be available to the public at the event.
