Penguin Point celebrated its 65th anniversary Sunday by hosting a car show in its parking lot, reminding many guests of the car shows it used to host in the past. Custom-built and all- original classic models filled the parking lot. Show coordinator Paul “Shorty” Bedics said he was happy with the turnout because he missed the annual cruise-ins that took place at Penguin Point until last year. Penguin Point Assistant Manager Rochelle Gidley said she didn’t initially want to host a car show as part of the anniversary celebration, because she never really attended one before, but after seeing the crowd, she was happy with the team’s decision to have another one. She said if given the opportunity to host this car show next year, she said absolutely. “I didn’t think it would turn out as great as it did,” she said. “Hopefully, they will all be back next year.” Top honors were awarded to: Jim Nolan, Bruce Sisk, Tim Lowman, Bob Orr, Bob Tucker, Martha Coppes, Ron Truex and Jerry Cockey. The “best of show” was awarded to Roy Hoss, “best paint job” was awarded to John Dull, “the best Rat Rod” was awarded to Tim Secrist, “the best engine” was awarded to Bob O’Hara and Judy Newsome won the powder puff division. Bedics said he hopes to see a younger crowd attend future shows, even though he doesn’t think these shows will be around in the next five years because the younger generation doesn’t enjoy them as much as his generation does. Regardless, he said the best part of the car shows are the people who attend them. “I enjoy the people and they seem to have a good time,” he said. “It’s these kind of people who make good things happen.” The 25th annual Crusin Hoosiers is the next scheduled car show. It is in conjunction with First Friday, Aug. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. and will take place at the courthouse square in downtown Warsaw. There is a $12 entry fee. Gates will open at 3 p.,m with registration following from 4 to 6 p.m. All proceeds from the show will be donated to the Baker Youth Club.
