In honoring Donald Reinholt as Veteran of the Month this month at the Kosciusko County Commissioners meeting today, county officials said they wanted to recognize those who served in an everyday capacity.

“We wanted to take time to thank the guys who just went,” County Veterans Affairs Officer Rich Maron said. “Who knew that at any time their number could be called.”

Reinholt, owner of Reinholt’s Town Square Furniture in Warsaw, served as a truck driver while stationed in Germany between 1954 and 1956. He had enlisted straight out of high school and attained the rank of sergeant.

“When I was a young man – a young boy – going into the military, I was so uncertain,” Reinholt recalled. “I knew I had to salute the officers, but I didn’t know who the officers were.”

So until he learned to tell them apart, he said he saluted everyone just to be safe.

Also during the meeting, Emergency Management Director Ed Rock informed commissioners of plans to clean Tippecanoe River. The work must be done with hand tools to not disturb creatures living on the river bottom, he noted.

He estimated cleanup of the middle portion of the river would cost about $3,000 per mile. The county also will need to obtain riverside access to haul material away.

The river needs to be cleared to address drainage issues in the county, though Commissioner Ron Truex observed that rivers in neighboring counties also will need to be cleared.

Rock said he would like to get the state involved to see that longer sections of the Tippecanoe are cleared.
