NORTH WEBSTER – Rick Owens was named Person of the Year at the North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Chamber banquet Monday, March 16.
Owens was among several individuals recognized during the annual event.
“Our winner for Person of the Year does his work behind the scenes. Very few people really know him, and he has zero identity on the internet. It was almost impossible to secretively research our winner,” said Emily Shipley, chamber president.
Owens played a key role in leading and managing the repairs and refurbishment of the Dixie Boat, a vessel more than 100 years old. The project required many hours of work and numerous volunteers to complete renovations so the boat could return to the lake.
“Rick’s dedication to restoring and maintaining the Dixie has preserved an important piece of the community’s story while also supporting tourism and local pride,” Shipley said.
Restoring a historic vessel requires countless hours of work, problem-solving and commitment. Owens took on the challenge with determination and passion, ensuring the Dixie could once again cruise the lake and continue its tradition of bringing families, visitors and neighbors together, Shipley said.
“Because of Rick Owens’ efforts, the Dixie Sternwheeler remains a living part of North Webster’s history rather than just a memory,” Shipley said. “His work reflects a deep appreciation for the community and a desire to preserve the experiences that make North Webster special.”
Owens will serve as grand marshal of the Mermaid Festival Parade Saturday.
