There are so many dogs that need a good home but are without one.
With that in mind a group of women, who have all volunteered at animal shelters and rescues in the past, created One Dog At A Time Rescue.
Julie Smith is part of that group and she sends out e-mails to those looking for a dog full-time or who are looking to be a foster parent for one.
She includes photos and a story to help personalize each dog's situation.
"It's really been a big help," said Smith of adding the dog's background. "It really helps people know what the dog has been through."
Many of the dogs that are being given up come from good homes but either have hit hard times or personal issues arose.
The organization is working with Dr. Richard Brungardt out of Syracuse to provide the medical care for the dogs.
People can ask to be put on the e-mail list or sometimes they are forwarded information about dogs from a friend.
If someone is interested in a dog from One Dog At A Time they must go through a check.
While Smith said she appreciates when someone is enthusiastic to adopt, for the sake of the dog they do not only do a home check but a check of the potential new owner's veterinarian as well.
Smith said her group is building up its contacts with other rescue groups in the state and works hard to place every dog, whether it be in Warsaw, Indianapolis or even out of state.
The rescue also is working on a partnership with the Elkhart County Animal Shelter.
"We wanted to be able to help those who couldn't help themselves," said Smith.
Smith said the group started over the summer and came about because of the sheer amount of numbers of dogs without homes in Kosciusko County.
The group includes Smith, April Sheller, Rhonda Lewis, Sandy Courson, Mandy Sloan, Suzanne Abel, Shelly Brigham, Rachael Burris and Launda Ewell.
Ewell also runs Seven's Heaven Wildlife Rehabilitation near Pierceton.
Some of the dogs that One Dog At A Time is looking to place in a home will be on hand at Pet Supplies Plus, 2882 Frontage Road, Warsaw, for a Meet and Greet today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
One Dog At A Time is not only looking for good foster and full-time homes but also corporate and personal donations to help defray the costs to owners of getting shots and spaying or neutering.
The organization recently received its first corporate donation from The Revolving Closet in Syracuse. For more information on the organization or to join the e-mail list, e-mail rescuedogs10@yahoo.com or julie.smith@odtr.org
