NORTH MANCHESTER - Award-winning New York Times journalist and eight-time author Doug Frantz is coming home Thursday.

During his hometown visit, the Manchester High graduate and former North Manchester News-Journal reporter will lead discussions at Manchester College and Manchester High School about Middle Eastern perceptions of America.

Relations between the Mideast and the United States is a topic Frantz knows well.

As former New York Times bureau chief in Istanbul, he reported on the war in Afghanistan close-up.

Frantz also has reported for The Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.

His work at the Los Angeles Times brought him name recognition and prepared him for his current position, editor for investigative reporting at The New York Times.

While at the L.A. Times, Frantz wrote both of his Pulitzer Prize-nominated investigative series. One focused on pre-Gulf War American and Iraqi relations and the other on the Church of Scientology.

Frantz is the son of Donald and Jo Joyce (Jody) Frantz and brother to Joe and Tom Frantz. He graduated from Manchester High School in 1967 and from DePauw University in 1971. He is a graduate of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

At 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Frantz will give a public lecture in Manchester College's Oakwood Hall great room. For those who can't attend that session, he will present a second talk that evening, at 7 p.m. in the Manchester High School Learning Center.

Frantz's visit is funded through a $13.88 million Plowshares Peace Studies grant shared by Indiana's three peace colleges - Manchester, Earlham and Goshen colleges - awarded by Lilly Endowment Inc.
