NORTH WEBSTER – Dog cleanup laws will have more bite in an amendment town council approved Tuesday. The amendment will allow police to fine dog owners who don’t clean up after their pets on property not owned by the town. The first offense will receive a warning, followed a $25 fine, then $50 and $100. The amendment was proposed after council members and police received complaints about defiant dog owners on private property. It goes into effect after 30 days, though Police Chief Greg Church said he can begin informing offenders immediately. Also during the meeting, council approved new parking signs for an overflow lot for the Dixie Boat landing and adjacent park and Pizza King. Karilyn Metcalf, president of Dixie Sternwheeler Inc., requested the signs after noting that drivers often don’t notice current signage because it faces the wrong way and is easily hidden by parked cars. The town bought the property and spread gravel for the lot on Himes Street about a year ago. Council member Tim Hine agreed to work on getting two-sided metal signs and Metcalf said Dixie Sternwheeler Inc. is willing to contribute toward them. And council agreed to downtown road closures for Dixie Days requested by Sue Ward, president of the North Webster Chamber of Commerce. The closures were requested for July 27; Dixie Days is July 26 and 27.
