Warsaw Police Department investigated a train-pickup truck accident on Hickory Street near Center Street at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday. A northbound Norfolk & Southern train struck a parked 2000 Nissan Frontier pickup owned by Antonio Demorais, South Lyon, Mich. The truck was parked too close to the railroad tracks after it ran out of gas and Demorais coasted to Hickory Street. The Nissan was not occupied. The driver had gone to the Shell gas station at Center and Detroit streets to get gas, andtold police he had not realized he parked too close to the tracks. When the driver left, there was no indication of a train. Moments later the crossing gates activated as the train approached. The Nissan Frontier sustained significant disabling damage. The Norfolk & Southern train was traveling at approximately 24 mph at the time of the crash. The two-engine train stopped just north of Fort Wayne Street and blocked all crossings south for almost two hours, causing significant traffic problems as motorists had to drive around the 123-car, 7,657-foot-long train. The train was moved as soon as the investigation and inspection of the train was complete. All of the train warning devices and crossing signals were working properly and the train did not derail, according to WPD.
