The Northern Indiana Hispanic Health Coalition will host a health fair at Kosciusko Community YMCA, 1401 E. Smith St., Warsaw, on Saturday.
This event is organized thanks to the generosity of K21 Health Foundation and the United Way of Kosciusko, and hosted by YMCA. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the YMCA gymnasium.
Since 2010, when the NIHHC opened its doors in Warsaw, the NIHHC has provided over 10,000 free health screenings to 2,200 people, which equates to over $60,000 in free health care for the underserved community of Kosciusko, according to a press release from NIHHC.
During Saturday’s health fair, the NIHHC will be offering 11 free health screenings, administered by over 30 community volunteers and health care providers. In addition, exhibitors, such as Heartline Pregnancy, CANI, Combined Community Services and Masterson Chiropractic will be in attendance to promote their services, and educate our participants on how they can adopt healthier lifestyles.
The purpose of our health fairs are to help people identify mainly the risk factors associated with heart diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, among others. Also, educate them about the results of their tests, and empower them with the knowledge of how to live a healthier lifestyle.
The free health screenings will include a one-on-one explanation of what each result means, and with concrete ways on how each person can improve their health.
Over 3,000 flyers have been distributed in the community, detailing the free screenings to be offered, which are: lipid panels (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides), glucose, anemia, back screenings, oxygen saturation, and many others, administered completely free of charge.
If the participant requires further medical attention, the NIHHC will seek options that are viable to the participant´s health needs and economic availability and provide further assistance. Also, the participant has the option to join the NIHHC´s health education classes regarding how to control and/or prevent chronic illness and live a healthier life.
Currently, the NIHHC has been hosting a weekly educational class called “Let’s Take Care of Our Health” at the K21 Pavilion on Thursdays where students have the opportunity to listen to a doctor talk about various diseases such as diabetes, and afterward are invited to learn how to make a healthy recipe with professional chef Theresa Daggett.
The NIHHC participated in the Warsaw Fire Department’s Family Safety Day which was a huge success, the press release states. The organization was able to provide health screenings to over 100 community members at no cost to them.
All services are free while supplies last, and all children present must be accompanied by an adult.
