Two alcoholic beverage transfers of ownership were approved by the Kosciusko County Alcoholic Beverage Commission Thursday.
In both instances, the former owners stood to lose their alcoholic beverage permits because of various violations.Greg Reed and Michelle Halsey have assumed ownership of the former Knockers Sports Bar, 717 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. It now is known as Duffy's Pub & Grub.
Under the Knockers permit, a total of three gambling machine violations were filed in January and February. The local board denies a permit renewal after three violations and the state is upholding this ruling.
Another transfer occurred for the same reasons, three gambling machine-related violations, at Bud's Bar in Milford, when it was owned by Whetten Restaurants and Gary Whetten. The local and state board denied a permit renewal in July 2006.
A grace period is granted by the state to allow for transfers of ownership.
The former Bud's Bar is now known as Just-N-Time and owned by Yoder's Enterprises, Justin Yoder, Milford, president and secretary.
Yoder appeared at the meeting with his attorney to talk about a conviction that occurred in Ligonier six years ago for contributing to the delinquency of minors.
Yoder also is the assistant manager of the Tippecanoe Country Club and a middle school-level basketball coach.
"I know I screwed up," Yoder said to the board. "That mistake took away my childhood dream of being a police officer."
The board approved the transfer.
Board member Elim Smith said he understood the gambling machines had just been moved to another nearby building. Excise police cannot search an address that doesn't have an alcohol permit.
Yoder said if there were gambling machines in another building, "It's not my problem."
The board renewed, for one year, the beer, wine and liquor license for the Claypool Inn, 108 S. Main St, Claypool.
The establishment, owned by Harold Hughey, has one gambling machine violation against it.
Hughey was warned by the board not to have any more violations.
The board also:
n Approved a two-year beer, wine and liquor renewal for Dee Dee's International, 9522 N. 300E, Syracuse, doing business as Dee Dee's on Dewart Lake. Denise Marie Cook, Syracuse, is president and secretary.
n Approved a transfer permit for Marsh Supermarket No. 56 at 500 E. Buffalo St., Warsaw.
n Continued a permit renewal request for the Barbee Landing, 3687 N. Barbee Road. Philip Fozo is president, Beverley Fozo is secretary, both of Warsaw.
Board members are Gordon Vanator, Ken Johnson and Elim Smith.
