New Council Members Attend Etna Green Meeting

ETNA GREEN - Two town councils were present for Wednesday's meeting at Etna Green. Current council members, Andy Cook, Keith Robbins and Russell "Pete" Miller, chaired the meeting, while incoming council members, Ruben Conley, Jeff Klinefelter and Eileen Hall, were in attendance to witness the goings on.

A Republican convention took place Friday in Etna Green in which incoming council was elected by 61 voters. A total of eight people, including current council members, were seeking the elected offices. Clerk-treasurer Laura Baker was unopposed.

All three council seats are at-large, with the past districts abolished by a recent ordinance. The current council retains office through the end of this year when the three new council members will take office.

In business matters, the council voted to make the intersection of South Walnut and East Spring streets a four-way stop. An ordinance establishing the placement of stop signs will be presented next month. The four-way stop is an attempt to slow down speeding motorists.

The council also passed an ordinance for a cash reserve fund for the electric department to be transferred to the general fund. The $36,000 will be used in connection with a Department of Commerce grant.

Council members will determine whether land on Broadway Street can accept water and sewer lines. The landowner asked the council for permission to place a mobile home on the property, but the council must first see if it is feasible.

Baker was given permission to advertise for bids for the wastewater treatment project once approval of a Rural Development application is received.

Cpl. Floyd Knafel of the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department presented a report of police activities in town for the past month.
