Nappanee Soldier Dies From Iraq Bomb Injuries

NAPPANEE - Army Staff Sergeant James P. Snyder, a Nappanee resident, died May 10 from injuries suffered while serving in Iraq.

Snyder, 48, formerly of Syracuse, died in Columbus, Ga. at the Army Hospital at Fort Benning.

He was injured in a roadside bomb attack four months ago while on patrol in Baghdad.

He was treated at a military hospital in Germany and then transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washinbton D.C.

He underwent six surgeries in three weeks, according to family members who spoke to local media.

At Fort Benning, metal rods were implanted in his legs.

He was an active duty staff sergeant with the Army, recently stationed in Ft. Benning. He previously served in the Gulf War and was in his third tour in Iraq.

He was 21 months from retirement.
