Miller's Merry Manor Wins Community Quiz Bowl

Miller’s Merry Manor were the winners of the Warsaw Education Foundation Community Quiz Bowl Tuesday night.
Second place went to Lakeview Middle School Team Three and third place went to Ivy Tech Community College.
The two-hour event was at the Warsaw Community High School Tiger Den and Larry Peppel served as moderator.
There were 55 teams from area businesses and organizations who participated.
Each five-person team came up with one answer to each question in the Quiz Bowl categories: “Academics,” “2015 Year In Review,” “Indiana History-Celebrating Our State’s Bicentennial” and “The Award Goes To.”
Team members had 20 seconds to answer each question and 40 seconds for math questions.
There was $23,500 raised for the Warsaw Education Foundation from sponsorships and entry fees during the event.
Attendees also raised $1,823.78 for the purchase of a camera stabilization system for the radio, television, videography and film classes at the Warsaw Area Career Center.
Some examples of questions:
From 2015 Year In Review, “Though it grossed over $430 million worldwide, according to Entertainment Weekly this Clint Eastwood directed movie only won an Academy Award at the 2016 Oscars for sound editing.” The answer was “American Sniper.”
“Who was Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2015?” The answer was Angela Merkel, chancelor of Germany.
Academics: “Which form of pottery takes its name from the Italian world for baked earth?” The answer was terracotta.
“Approximately how long does is take light from the sun to reach the Earth?” The answer is eight minutes.
“Who famously said ‘Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration?’” The answer is Thomas Edison.
Indiana history questions included: “How many counties are in Indiana?” (92),  “What is Indiana’s oldest zoo?” (Potawatomi Zoo) and “What was Indiana’s first city?” (Vincennes).
And The Award Goes To questions included: “With 37 Emmy’s won during its 11-year run, which primetime TV comedy has won the most Emmy Awards?” The answer is Frasier.
“This artist has won six Grammy’s including one in 1978 for his album ‘52nd Street,’ who is it?” The answer is Billy Joel.
Lake City Bank sponsored “halftime” refreshments. Maple Leaf Farms and DePuy Synthes were valedictorian level sponsors. Honor roll level sponsors included Citadel Structural Mechanics, Louis Dreyfus Commodities, Esther Pfleiderer Charitable Trust/1st Source Bank, Silveus Insurance Group/Hall Marose Silveus, Warsaw Morning Optimist Club, Todd and Pam Weingart and Zimmer Biomet.
