Posted
MILFORD – A Milford woman has died from injuries she received after her vehicle was struck by a train in Milford Monday afternoon.

Milford police and fire departments, along with Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies, responded Monday to the Emeline Street crossing after a 2:09 p.m. report of a pickup truck that had been struck by a train.

Emergency personnel arrived and found the driver of the Dodge truck unconscious and in critical condition.

The driver, identified as Carolyn A. Handy, 77, Milford, was extricated by Milford firemen and immediately transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center by Multi-Township EMS with head and internal injuries.

KCSD deputies were notified by Parkview officials that Handy had died at 4:09 p.m. due to blunt force trauma.

Kosciusko County Fatal  Alcohol Crash Team members stated that Handy was eastbound on Emeline Street when she failed to stop at the stop sign and railroad crossing, and entered into the path of a southbound Norfolk Southern freight train.

The train conductor and engineer stated that they had been activating their whistle and bell extensively through town with the various crossings, and they witnessed the Dodge pickup truck pull into the path of their 37-car freight train at the last minute.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Kosciusko County FACT.
