Milford Uses 25% Of Year's Road Salt

MILFORD - Heavy snow this winter has caused Milford's street department to use 24 tons of salt, almost a quarter of the town's total stockpile, and four times more than normal.

Milford has a contract with Morton Salt for 100 tons, which is typically enough for the year, but may not be enough for this one. In an average year, the town uses only 6 tons of salt at this point, Utilities Superintendent Dallas Winchester said.

What if they run out? Winchester joked that they can always borrow from nearby Syracuse.

In other business:

• The board approved a 3 percent raise for all town employees.

• The police department announced the receipt of two grants totaling $1,800.

Kosciusko Coalition On Drug Education awarded the department the money to buy new radar equipment for one vehicle and stop sticks for another.

Dave Hobbs, town marshal, said attending the monthly K-CODE meetings is well worth the time officers spend. "For our department," Hobbs said, "(K-CODE officials) do a good job"

• The board approved the purchase of an e. coli testing kit and equipment for the water department. The equipment and one year's worth of testing supplies cost $3,815 and are required by regulations.

In addition to new regulations requiring e. coli testing, the department also must test for phosphorous, and test three times a week. The town used to run water tests bi-weekly. The increase in testing could become costly for the town, Winchester said.

Milford will hold its year-end meeting Dec. 30 at 8 a.m.

Town council members in attendance were Gary Hurd and Douglas Ruch. Robert Cockburn was absent.
