MILFORD – Town council members signed the paperwork on annexation, but tabled actual approval of the land acquisition Monday.

Milford council signed the agreement to induce annexation of the remaining Beer property north of town. The land at CR 1300 and Old Ind. 15 totals 220 acres.

The town was first approached for annexation two years ago, and approved appending a portion of the land last year.

They tabled final approval on the remaining land until next month’s meeting, pending the results of environmental and land use studies.

Also during the meeting, the council approved up to $300 for two signs at the edge of town recognizing Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Harry J. Michael, who was born in Milford in 1922.

Michael was posthumously awarded the medal in 1946, a year after the second lieutenant with the 80th Infantry Division captured two German machinegun emplacements and led his platoon in further successful attacks in Neiderzerf, Germany.

He was killed in action the following morning, and was buried in a Goshen cemetery.

Town officials said they were approached by several residents interested in seeing Michael recognized.

“I think it’s a fantastic idea,” council member Bob Cockburn said. “I didn’t know we had one. I think everybody should know.”

Earlier in the meeting, Pam Kennedy, executive director of Housing Opportunities of Warsaw, a countywide housing assistance
agency based in Milford, encouraged participation in the Day of Caring in August.

She said there are five people with needs in town and that the application deadline for volunteering is extended to June 30. She expressed hope that Milford sees greater participation this year than in the past.

“I’d like to see a few hundred people sign up here in town,” she said.

During the fire department report, it was noted that the department is requesting that residents not start burns in their yards during this hot, dry period of weather.
