Milford Shows Appreciation To 'Harvest With A Heart'

Posted
MILFORD - Milford Town Council began its November meeting Monday by presenting a certificate of appreciation to Harvest With A Heart.

The organization's purpose is to provide fresh produce and seasonal items, such as winter clothing, at the minimal price of 25 cents. Money collected is then donated to several area charities.

Harvest With A Heart is the brainchild of Nancy Haines, Angel Hardy and Ann Schlaback.

"We think this is a great thing that you're doing for Milford and for the surrounding community," said Council President Dr. Robert Cockburn. "This is a great chance to help others and to be helped by others."

George Robertson, Kosciusko Economic Development Commission, spoke before the council to introduce the various programs his office plans to bring to the area.

"We are a countywide organization," he said. "It's important to me that small communities do well and prosper. We plan to develop marketing material not only for the county, but for each community."

Robertson emphasized that while it's important to bring jobs to a community, it's more important to bring good-paying jobs. This can be accomplished by identifying which businesses offer job potential, then developing recruiting, and training when needed, to fill those jobs.

"There are two other important goals that we have," Robertson said. "Business retention is one, and developing a diversified local economy is the other."

Due to the nature of Utilities Superintendent Dallas Winchester's recent illness, the council appointrf Randy Veach as water department operator in charge.

Veach does have the water treatment II credential, as well as his distribution system operator license.

Mark Brubaker has been appointed as wastewater treatment plant operator in charge, and is also fully credentialed.

In other utilities business, it was announced that the company contracted for work on the water tower, Fedewa, is behind schedule and probably will not complete work until right before Thanksgiving. That puts the completion date almost two weeks overdue, and leaves the company possibly contractually liable for an assessment of $500 a day for every day overdue. This matter will be discussed at another time, since the town attorney was not present at the meeting.

Town Marshal Rich Miotto reported the recent effort to remove junk cars was a success. Of nine cars tagged, all but one owner was compliant with getting their vehicle serviceable and in running condition.

The council approved the annual agreement for in-car computer terminal service for the police department, at the cost of $100 per vehicle. This is an interlocal agreement between Milford and Kosciusko County, and service is provided through Cisco.

In other business:

n Leaf pick up will end Monday. After that, leaves can be bagged and left by the curb for pick up.

n The council approved a $400 "stipend" bonus for town employees, which will be paid in December.

n The accounts payable voucher register was approved for payment with one addition.

Town council members are Robert Cockburn, Douglas Ruch and Gary Hurd.
