MILFORD -ÊA man is dead after a Thursday evening accident involving a train.

Darrell Doss, 33, Milford, was pronounced dead after his pickup hit a moving train and he was thrown from the vehicle around 6:27 p.m. Thursday.

According to witness statements received by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, Doss was northbound at a high rate of speed in a maroon 1997 Chevy S-10 pickup when he crashed through a railroad crossing gate on Old 15 in Milford.

The pickup broadsided an eastbound train traveling 35 miles per hour, and Doss was thrown from the vehicle, landing about 80 feet from the crash.

Doss was killed instantly and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Doss' pickup hit and was lodged under the 41st car in the 80-car train, which dragged the vehicle more than 1,500 feet.

The conductor of the train was not aware of the accident and went into emergency stop mode only after a broken air line was detected in the area where the train was hit.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene of the crash by the Milford Police Department, Milford Fire Department, Multi-Township EMS and the Kosciusko County Coroner's Office. The accident remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.
